Gouache Painting — 4th May 2019
Miniature Flower Study — Gouache Painting — Workshop with artist Jo Reitze.
The session will give participants experience working in gouache (opaque watercolour) sometimes referred to as designer colour.

This is a forgiving medium and relies less on accidental effects than traditional watercolour. It is an ideal medium for travelling. The strong tonal contrasts of oil can be achieved without the mess as it is water-based. A post card sized flower study will be completed in the session.
Materials list will be supplied to you prior to the workshop.
THE TEACHER:
Jo is an accomplished oil and gouache teacher who has recently been shortlisted for the Eastbourne Prize and a Fellow of the Victorian Artists Society and president of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. She coordinated art at Canterbury girls for twenty years. Once she retired she started the “Paint Your Garden” project. Chinese Brush Painting
Learn the unique art of Chinese Brushpainting.
Discover brush strokes and techniques water, ink and colours on Xuan paper.
Brush Painting tradition is concerned with transporting the painter and viewer to a
peaceful place, hence its emphasis on flowers, trees, insects, small animals and other things
that signify nature.
A Chinese brush painting is never symmetrical;the negative space is a deliberate and
important consideration in the composition. There are multiple focal points and several
small focal elements to surprise and delight the viewer who comtemplates a work.

2018 EAS Art Exhibition – review
The Emerald Arts Society 49th Annual Art Exhibition had its opening on Saturday 3rd of November and it was a packed house when the awards were announced.
As well as representatives from Cardinia Shire, the Mayor, Cr. Collin Ross, Deputy Mayor Cr. Brett Owen and Cr. Jeff Springfield, there were teachers from the local schools, representatives from local groups and businesses within the community, and, of course, artists with their family and friends.
With over $4000 in prizes there were plenty of awards on offer, the most prestigious being Best in Show for Adults and Best NextGen Artist (under 20 yrs). Our congratulations go to Maxwell Wilks and Mitchell Edwards respectively.
There were also 7 best category awards for the Adults, which were awarded to Chris Britton (Printmaking), Judi Roberts (Pastel), Aldo Bellemo (Drawing), Barbara Thomas (Photography), Annette Slattery (Other Media), Sue Jarvis (Oils/Acrylics) and Kay Craig (Watercolour).
In the NextGen section there were there were winners in 3 categories, Poppy Rumoller in the U10’s, Noah Charters (U15) and Shana O’Brien (U20).
Our judge for this year was professional artist, Peter Smales who was impressed with the high standard and the wonderful diversity in style and medium. Our congratulations go to all those who won awards as well as everyone who entered the exhibition, helping to make it such a wonderful display.
The arts society is very grateful to the Shire of Cardinia for its support as well as all the businesses and groups that regularly contribute to our art exhibition. This year we had 8 Gold Sponsors who each donated $250. Together with all the other donations we receive, large or small, we are able to offer multiple prizes and reward as many artists as possible for their efforts.
We are looking forward to 2019 when we will be celebrating our 50th year as an arts society in your community!

Glass Art / Leadlighting
For decades, the Emerald Arts Society has housed a leadlight room, where students have created a variety of art works including windows, mirrors, lampshades, jewellery boxes, terrariums and mobiles.
Under the expert guidance of Lindsay Dyer, students quickly learn techniques to overcome any fears they may have of cutting and working with glass. Glass grinders also allow students to make complex pieces from the first project. Classes predominately uses lead cane, not copper foil for finishing, as this tends to produce a better finished product.
Students are free to choose any project they wish to work on, be it something small, large or even mending an existing broken item.
THE TEACHER: Lindsay has been teaching leadlight classes at EAS since 1984 and has been creating glass works of art for many years prior to this. Lindsay enjoys sharing his extensive knowledge of this medium with new students.

LOCATION: EAS Studio, Cnr Church & Anne Sts
COST: $115 per term
