This workshop concentrates on drawing techniques, developing your characters and comic book illustrations. Suitable for beginners and for those with previous experience who want to hone their skills. Kenny Chan is a registered teacher with the Victorian Institute of Education and has been running workshops for over 10 years. He is based in Melbourne and has had many bookings throughout Victoria and interstate, teaching the techniques of drawing in Manga Art, comic illustrations, and more recently Super Hero art. In this hands on, small class workshop Trudy will introduce you to the bold printmaking process of linocut printmaking as well as how to make a concertina book. Linocut is a non-toxic relief process. Be inspired over the weekend as you create a masterpiece from linoleum blocks. Trudy has been teaching this medium for a number of years at Box Hill Institute of Visual Arts as well as from her studio. Having trouble painting convincing trees and showing depth in your landscapes? Maxine will show you how to achieve this… with some small drawing and wash exercises first, followed by a more developed watercolour painting, selected from the images she will supply. With the Hans Heysen exhibition currently in Melbourne, we can all learn from his beautiful tree portraits. Texture, Shape and Colour Values will be our focus, using the watercolour techniques of Wet In Wet, Drybrush and Lifting Off. In this workshop with Junko Azukawa, you will prepare your own ink then learn to make and use different sumi ink tones and brush techniques to create traditional Japanese Sumi ink painting on Washi paper made from the mulberry tree. You will learn to feel and capture the meaning of objects from nature with your interpretation then you will express the objects variously with the brush pressure, rhythm, tones and confidence in your strokes. You’ll not only learn brush stroke technique but also experience the whole process and understand yourself through your work. Miniature Flower Study — Gouache Painting — Workshop with artist Jo Reitze. The session will give participants experience working in gouache (opaque watercolour) sometimes referred to as designer colour. This is a forgiving medium and relies less on accidental effects than traditional watercolour. It is an ideal medium for travelling. The strong tonal contrasts of oil can be achieved without the mess as it is water-based. A post card sized flower study will be completed in the session. Materials list will be supplied to you prior to the workshop. THE TEACHER: Jo is an accomplished oil and gouache teacher who has recently been shortlisted for the Eastbourne Prize and a Fellow of the Victorian Artists Society and president of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. Learn the unique art of Chinese Brushpainting. Discover brush strokes and techniques water,ink and colours on Xuan paper. Brush Painting tradition is concerned with transporting the painter and viewer to a peaceful place, hence its emphasis on flowers, trees, insects, small animals and other things that signify nature. A Chinese brush painting is never symmetrical;the negative space is a deliberate and important consideration in the composition. There are multiple focal points and several small focal elements to surprise and delight the viewer who comtemplates a work.
